The Camino de Santiago known in English as the Way of St. James, is a network of pilgrims' ways or pilgrimages leading to the shrine of the apostle Saint James the Great in the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia in northwestern Spain, where tradition has it that the remains of the saint are buried. Many follow its routes as a form of spiritual path or retreat for their spiritual growth. It is also popular with hiking and cycling enthusiasts and organized tour groups, and can be seen within the context of Christian colonization and Christianization.
I've done many hikes in my past, most of them were here in Czech Republic. But I've never been on a hike for more than a week and this time I knew that I want to do something big. I first heard about the Camino from my sister and dad, they both did the Camino few years ago and from the things they said, I immediatly fell in love with the Camino. I searched it on google and I found many positive reviews from the people who did the Camino before and I knew this is it.
The last thing I had to do was to choose a way I wanted follow . There are 7 well-established routes of St.James, all of them are lovely but
I choosed the Portuguese Way because it's not so crowded, has amazing sceneries and I've never been in Portugal!
I bought a great guide book (Camino Portugues) which splits the route (Lisbon to Santiago) into 25 stages with two coastal options, and takes
in historic and religious sites and stunning scenery. This guide actually really helped me a lot, there is many useful information about accomondation and points of interest. (no advertising haha)
Thanks to the guide I planned the whole journey - I knew that the whole hike has 252 Km so I booked my ticket for 8th of July and the return ticket for 17th of July. This meant that I had 9 days to walk from Porto to Santiago. - Never do that!! haha
This all means I had to walk 28 Km every day and to be honest I would never do that again because it's definitely better to take your time,
chill out at the places you like and never be in rush just as I was.
You don't have to plan the whole journey, I think it's better to adjust and do whatever you feel like at that moment - if you feel tired, take a break
- if you feel like you want to stay at one place for more days - do it. This is your adventure, your journey and your chance to do whatever you feel like you want to and that's what I love about backpacking.
The main rule which I always obey is pack as little as possible. Iťs necessary to be a minimalist during hiking.
This means take only the stuff which is necessary for survival, then the stuff you need for your comfort - every Kilogram counts!. I always create a table and I write down everything I need to pack. Obviously It depends on how many days I am about to be there and etc.
Stuff needed for Camino
- sleeping bag
- good hiking shoes
- credential (pilgrim passport)
